What should the United States do with the waste generated from its nuclear bomb production? Aside from the health risks of these materials, they also can be transformed into weapons.

Private companies with their hands in the federal government wallet have convinced the Department of Energy that they can recycle the waste and sell it to commercial nuclear reactors as mixed oxide fuel. So these companies receive billions of dollars in Department of Energy money. Meanwhile, nobody wants the fuel they’re creating. And it all just piles up at the Savannah River Site near Augusta, GA.

Friends of the Earth and the Union of Concerned Scientists have opposed this program, especially after a failed test in 2008.
